Very Unofficial Vermont HS Football QPRs through Friday

My blog makes a somewhat belated return with QPR numbers at the midpoint of Week 2. But I post this with a very large caveat: I'm not entirely sure which QPR format Division III is using this year.

With the divisions having seen significant shuffling, Division III is down to seven teams and they all play each other this fall. That means DIII could fairly switch to using the league QPR (which ignores games against other divisions) that Division II had used in past years. But as best as I can tell based on numbers in the Week 1 standings released by VIFL secretary Sean Farrell, that is not the case and all divisions are using the overall QPR that counts games against all Vermont opponents.

I sent out a few emails about this last weekend trying to get official word on this and couldn't get a firm answer, so coaches and ADs, if you see this and you are privy to that info, please let me know. More than anything, I want my numbers to be right.

Anyway, with that in mind, here are the UNOFFICIAL QPR standings through Friday's games:

Division I

(Includes all games vs. in-state opponents. Games vs. out-of-state teams are ignored)

1. St. Johnsbury (1-0 overall, 1-0 D1), 12 points, 12 QPR
T2. BFA-St. Albans (1-0 overall, 1-0 D1), 10 points, 10 QPR
T2. Mt. Mansfield (1-0 overall, 1-0 D1), 10 points, 10 QPR
T2. Rutland (1-0 overall, 1-0 D1), 10 points, 10 QPR
5. Burlington (1-0 overall, 0-0 D1), 7 points, 7 QPR
T6. Hartford (1-1 overall, 1-1 D1), 12 points, 6 QPR
T6. Middlebury (1-1 overall, 1-1 D1), 12 points, 6 QPR
T6. Colchester (1-1 overall, 1-1 D1), 12 points, 6 QPRT
9. South Burlington (1-1 overall, 1-1 D1), 10 points, 5 QPR
10. CVU (0-1 overall, 0-1 D1), 0 points, 0 QPR
T10. Essex (0-1 overall, 0-1 D1), 0 points, 0 QPR
T10. Rice (0-1 overall, 0-1 D1), 0 points, 0 QPR
T10. Brattleboro (0-2 overall, 0-1 D1), 0 points, 0 QPR

Division II

(Includes all games vs. in-state opponents. Games vs. out-of-state teams, including a loss for Woodstock, are ignored)

1. Fair Haven (1-0 overall, 1-0 D2), 9 points, 9 QPR
2. Bellows Falls (2-0 overall, 1-0 D2), 17 points, 8.5 QPR
T3. Milton (2-0 overall, 2-0 D2), 14 points, 7 QPR
T3. U-32 (1-0 overall, 1-0 D2), 7 points, 7 QPR
5. Mt. Anthony (1-1 overall, 1-1 D2), 9 points, 4.5 QPR
6. Lyndon (1-1 overall, 1-1 D2), 7 points, 3.5 QPR
T7. Burr and Burton (0-1 overall, 0-0 D2), 0 points, 0 QPR
T7. Otter Valley (0-1 overall, 0-1 D2), 0 points, 0 QPR
T7. Spaulding (0-1 overall, 0-1 D2), 0 points, 0 QPR
T7. Mt. Abraham (0-2 overall, 0-1 D2), 0 points, 0 QPR
T7. North Country (0-2 overall, 0-2 D2), 0 points, 0 QPR

Division III

(Includes all games vs. in-state opponents. Games vs. out-of-state teams, including a loss for Woodstock, are ignored)

1. Windsor (2-0 overall, 1-0 D3), 12 points, 6 QPR
T2. BFA-Fairfax (1-0 overall, 1-0 D3), 5 points, 5 QPR
T2. Mill River (1-0 overall, 1-0 D3), 5 points, 5 QPR
T2. Woodstock (1-1* overall, 1-0 D3), 5 points, 5 QPR
T5. Poultney/MSJ (0-1 overall, 0-1 D3), 0 points, 0 QPR
T5. Missisquoi (0-1 overall, 0-1 D3), 0 points, 0 QPR
T5. Springfield (0-2 overall, 0-2 D3), 0 points, 0 QPR

How do these numbers work? Teams receive 10 points for a win over a D1 opponent, 7 points for a win over a D2 opponent and 5 points for a win over a D3 opponent. Teams also receive 2 points for every game won by the teams they have beaten. QPR is total points divided by games played.

Teams of the Week

I don't know if I'm going to have time to do teams of the week again this season, but since I'm posting now I don't want to let start of the season slip into the history books without at least a quick recognition. So the teams in each division that most impressed me in Week 1 were:

* Division I: BFA-St. Albans in rolling past 2016 semfinalist CVU 34-7.
* Division II: Fair Haven in riding Cam Colutti's arm to a 61-22 win over Mt. Anthony.
* Division III: Woodstock in having the gumption to face a New York team in its bye week, despite a loss. No D1 or D2 teams face out-of-state teams this year, but Springfield and Missisquoi follow Woodstock's lead from the D3 ranks in the coming weeks.

And with all due respect to the St. Johnsbury-Hartford showdown, the game of the week had to be Lyndon's 27-22 over North Country. The rivalry game featured numerous lead changes, including a winning touchdown with 48 seconds left, and ended LI's long losing streak.
