Teams of the Week for Week 5

Here are my thoughts on the most impressive performances of Week 5 of the Vermont high school football season:

Teams of the week
  • Division I: There were a pair of matchups of 2-2 teams this weekend, and since I honored Brattleboro here last weekend, CVU gets the nod this time around. The Redhawks earned it by scoring the first 22 points in rolling to a 49-13 victory over St. Johnsbury on Saturday. It was an impressive response to last week's upset loss to Essex and keeps the CVU in the running for a top-four playoff seed heading into critical matchups against Colchester and Mt. Anthony the next two weekends.
  • Division II: Amazingly it took five weeks for any of the chasing pack -- the four teams behind Burr and Burton in the standings -- to face each other. When two of them finally did Saturday, Bellows Falls stole a march on its rivals by rallying in the fourth quarter for a 28-16 over Milton. At 5-0, the Terriers still have a shot at the top seed if they can knock off high-flying BBA in Week 8, but either way, BF moved ahead of Burlington, Fair Haven and Milton in a race for home field in the semifinals that will see plenty of head-to-head showdowns over the next four weekends.
  • Division III: A week after Winooski's emotional first victory of its farewell season, Mount St. Joseph one-upped the Spartans in the most emphatic example of the state's season-long offensive explosion yet: MSJ 84, Winooski 70. It was MSJ's first win since Week 2 of the 2013 season, and it took 12 touchdowns -- five on the ground from Clay Drinwater and a combined six through the air and on the ground from QB Joe Ruby to make it happen. The result leaves both teams tied with three other schools for the eighth and final playoff spot with three weeks to go, and the 154 combined points were 47 more than the next highest score in Vermont in this offense-happy season.
Game of the week
  •  U-32 14, Woodstock 13: For all the offense in Winooski, the most drama of the D3 weekend came in a defensive showdown in Woodstock as U-32 blocked a late extra point to hold on in a matchup of two of division's best. A fumble recovery in the end zone and a big Colby Brochu run gave the Raiders the edge a game they won despite running just 12 offensive plays in the first half. That keeps U-32 atop the standings heading into Friday's showdown with fellow unbeaten Otter Valley.

Week 5 Vermont HS Football QPRs

Saturday's games didn't change a lot in the standings but there were key results in all three divisions.

Perhaps the most notable was in Divison III, where Oxbow's victory over Fairfax moved the Olympians to two wins and dropped the Bullets into a tie among the bottom five teams for the last playoff spot. The deadlock will last only a week, though, as next Saturday's Fairfax-Poultney matchup will move the postseason cut line to two victories one way or the other.

Meanwhile, in Division I CVU stayed in the hunt for homefield in the quarterfinals by rolling past St. Johnsbury while Bellows Falls stayed within striking distance of league-leading Burr and Burton by getting past Milton.

All in all, there's still plenty still to be decided with three or four weeks to go in the regular season.

Anyway, here are the QPRs:

Week 4 Teams of the Week

Who impressed in Week 4 of Vermont high school football? Here are my thoughts:

Teams of the week
  • Division I: The toughest schedule in the state this fall might belong to Brattleboro, but following Friday night's 51-20 win over South Burlington the Colonels find themselves in the middle of the DI pack at 2-2. That's not bad for a team that's already faced Middlebury and Hartford. Cheick Diakite had another monster game on the ground for a BUHS team that will have a big say in how the playoff picture plays out, starting with next week's homecoming showdown with Colchester.
  • Division II: The schedule makers weren't too kind to Mt. Abraham either, giving the Eagles matchups with Burlington, Bellows Falls and Fair Haven in their first three games after moving up from D3. The results were predictably three big losses. But facing a more favorable matchup against North Country in Week 4, the Eagles shined defensively and turned a pair of first-half touchdowns into a 14-7 win. MAU probably won't be a factor in the playoff race, but with fellow 1-3 Lyndon on the schedule next weekend, that first win could be a start toward a respectable fall.
  • Division III: The sentimental winners of the week have to be the Winooski Spartans. For a program in its final season, just having enough players to get back on the field after a Week 3 forfeit was a triumph. But the Spartans didn't stop there, dominating the second half to score a 46-28 victory over Spaulding. And the success might not end there. With winless MSJ coming to town next week, the Spartans are in position to put themselves into the thick of the playoff race heading into their last two regular-season games -- at Springfield and at home against Fairfax.
Game of the week
  •  Middlebury 18, Colchester 14: The Tigers didn't face much adversity in their back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2013 and 2014. They couldn't have faced much more than they did at Colchester on Friday night, finding themselves down 14-0 in the fourth quarter. Middlebury responded on both sides of the ball, scoring on its last three positions and forcing three quick stops to come from behind. With that obstacle passed and South Burlington, Essex, Rice and CVU left on the schedule, the two-time defending champions have a great chance to take a 30-game winning streak into the playoffs.

Week 4 Vermont HS Football QPRs

Coming out of last night's games, I was thinking three wins might be the cutoff to make the playoffs in Division I this fall. Then Essex knocked off CVU, and tightened up the pack significantly.

It's safe to say Middlebury, Hartford an Rutland will be in the postseason even if they slump badly down the stretch. But with four 2-2 teams behind them and with Essex with a favorable remaining schedule, teams are probably going to need four wins to feel safe about a top-eight finish.

Meanwhile, Burr and Burton continues to steamroll the DII field. That the Bulldogs have 42 QPR points after four weeks -- more than all the teams in the state except Middlebury -- playing all D2 opponents is astounding. A Week 8 matchup with Bellows Falls is the last major obstacle between BBA and a second straight top seed.

Division III looks like a two-tier battle to me, with the top five fighting for homefield and the rest of the pack looking to join those five in the playoffs. Oxbow at Fairfax next week could be a big measuring stick among the five 1-3 teams.

Anyway, here's where things stand thus far:

Division I

(Includes all games vs. in-state opponents. Games vs. out-of-state teams, including losses for Rutland and Hartford, are ignored)

1. Middlebury (4-0 overall, 4-0 D1), 54 points, 13.5 QPR
2. Hartford (3-1* overall, 3-0 D1), 40 points, 13.33 QPR
3. Rutland (3-1* overall, 3-0 D1), 38 points, 12.67 QPR
4. Colchester (2-2 overall, 2-2 D1), 26 points, 6.50 QPR
5T. Brattleboro (2-2 overall, 2-2 D1), 24 points, 6 QPR
5T. Mt. Anthony (2-2 overall, 2-2 D1), 24 points, 6 QPR
7T. CVU (2-2 overall, 2-2 D1), 22 points, 5.5 QPR
7T. St. Johnsbury (2-2 overall, 2-2 D1), 22 points, 5.5 QPR
9. Essex (1-3 overall, 1-3 D1), 14 points, 3.5 QPR
10. Rice (1-3 overall, 1-2 D1), 12 points, 3 QPR
11. BFA-St. Albans (1-3 overall, 0-3 D1), 7 points, 1.75 QPR

7T. Mt. Mansfield (0-3 overall, 0-2 D2), 0 points, 0 QPR
7T. North Country (0-3 overall, 0-3 D2), 0 points, 0 QPR

Division III

(Includes all games vs. in-state opponents. Games vs. out-of-state teams, including Windsor's loss to Lebanon, NH, are ignored)

1. U-32 (3-0 overall, 3-0 D3), 23 points, 7.67 QPR
2. Otter Valley (4-0 overall, 4-0 D3), 30 points, 7.5 QPR
3. Woodstock (3-1 overall, 3-1 D3), 27 points, 6.75 QPR
4. Mill River (3-1 overall, 3-1 D3), 19 points, 4.75 QPR
5. Windsor (2-2* overall, 2-1 D3), 14 points, 4.67 QPR
6. Springfield (2-2 overall, 2-2 D3), 12 points, 3 QPR
7T. BFA-Fairfax (1-3 overall, 1-3 D3), 7 points, 1.75 QPR
7T. Oxbow (1-3 overall, 1-3 D3), 7 points, 1.75 QPR
7T. Poultney (1-3 overall, 1-3 D3), 7 points, 1.75 QPR
7T. Winooski (1-3 overall, 1-3 D3), 7 points, 1.75 QPR
11. Spaulding (1-3 overall, 1-3 D3), 5 points, 1.25 QPR
12. MSJ (0-4 overall, 0-4 D3), 0 points, 0 QPR

How do these numbers work? Teams receive 10 points for a win over a D1 opponent, 7 points for a win over a D2 opponent and 5 points for a D3 opponent. Teams also receive 2 points for every game won by the teams they have beaten. QPR is total points divided by games played.

Highlights from Week 3

Here's my perspective on the big performances of Week 3 in Vermont high school football:

Teams of the week
  • Division I: In a week packed with blowouts, Colchester's 18-17 victory over Mt. Anthony stands out. The Lakers overcame injuries to a number of key players -- and an 11-point second-half deficit -- to improve to 2-1. With a matchup against Middlebury coming up next weekend, that was critical if the Lakers hope to remain among the league's top tier.
  • Division II: A week after folding late in a blowout loss to Burr and Burton, Fair Haven responded with a dominant second-half performance of its own. Trailing Mt. Abraham by 10 late in the second quarter, the Slaters racked up 44 unanswered points to run away with a 56-22 victory. That keeps FHU firmly in the mix of what is looking like a five-way race for the four DII playoff spots.
  • Division III: Only one of the DIII matchups was decided by fewer than 20 points so it should come as no surprise Mill River gets the nod here. The Minutemen earned the recognition, though, overcoming a 14-7 halftime deficit and holding off Oxbow 27-21 after scoring the go-ahead points on a safety. This could be a key result in the race for home field in the quarterfinals as both teams entered 1-1 and it saddled Oxbow with its second bitter defeat in a row. The Olympians yielded two touchdowns in the last two minutes in a 26-21 loss to Woodstock in Week 2.
Game of the week
  • Rutland 69, South Burlington 38: I picked this one not because it was a particularly exciting game -- Rutland led 35-16 at the break and SBHS came no closer than 42-24 -- but because it illustrates the trend so far in Vermont high school football. Namely, basketball scores. Vermont teams have been involved in 49 games through the first three weeks, and 25 of those have seen at least one team score 40 or more. And while the 107 total points in South Burlington on Friday night were by far the highest total so far, 10 other games (including Rutland's Week 2 loss to Plymouth, NH) have seen a team hit 50 and three of those also surpassed 60. Crazy offense isn't just a Vermont phenomenon these days, though. Try this one from Pennsylvania on Friday night: Meadville 107, DuBois 90

Week 3 QPR rankings

We're three weeks into the season, and pecking orders are starting to take shape in the Vermont high school football ranks.

That's particularly the case in Division II, where the top half of the league has largely spent the last three weekends beating up on the bottom half. The good news for 0-3 teams Mt. Abraham, Mt. Mansfield and North Country is that they still have head-to-head meetings left. The bad news? They might need to win out to make the playoffs, and of the three, only MMU has played Burr and Burton already.

Things are more fluid in the other divisions, especially in Division III where five 1-2 teams are currently battling for the last two playoffs spots.

Anyway, here's where things stand thus far:

Division I

(Includes all games vs. in-state opponents. Games vs. out-of-state teams, including losses for Rutland and Hartford, are ignored)

1. Hartford (2-1* overall, 2-0 D1), 26 points, 13 QPR

Teams of the week

Who impressed in Week 2 of Vermont high school football? Here's my perspective:

Teams of the week
  • Division I: Their were plenty of clutch performances around the league this weekend -- with Hartford's hard-fought win over Colchester and Brattleboro's overtime thriller against St. Johnsbury particularly coming to mind. But Mt. Anthony's 20-13 victory over Essex was the biggest in my opinion. The Patriots proved their close battle with Middlebury on opening night was no fluke, and even with a difficult schedule ahead, MAU showed it's in position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2009 -- and possibly challenge for its first home postseason game since 1994.
  • Division II: As a Burlington alumnus and employee (I'm the Scholars' Bowl coach), I'm so tempted to say the Seahorses after they finally ended their losing streak against Rice. But in fairness, the performance of the week has to be Burr and Burton's. Saturday's 58-21 beatdown was a pretty emphatic way for the Bulldogs to pay back Fair Haven for last season's semifinal upset. With QB Griffin Stalcup piling up 12 TDs in the first two weeks, BBA is now clearly the team to beat.
  • Division III: Emphatic payback is also the theme here after Otter Valley romped past defending champion BFA-Fairfax, 54-0, a rematch of the 2014 title game. Between touchdowns from five players and holding the Bullets to 66 yards of offense, the Otters showed they're ready for another run deep into November.
Game of the week
  •  Brattleboro 41, St. Johnsbury 40 (2OT): Double overtime in itself is impressive. Add in the fact that both teams had a player with a five-touchdown day -- Chuck Diakite for Brattleboro and Collin Urie for St. Johnsbury -- and you've got quite the thriller. The kicking game decided it for the Colonels as both teams missed field goals on the first possession of overtime and the extra point was the decider in the second OT.

Week 2 QPRs

I've been keeping track of the Vermont high school football QPR ratings for the last several years, so I'm starting this blog to have a place to post them online in case anyone is interested. I also plan to share my thoughts on what's happening around the Vermont gridiron scene here from time to time and I might add game details when I can make it out to the field.

For now, my unofficial QPR numbers through Week 2 of the regular season are below. It's worth noting that my numbers are based on the number of games a team has played rather than how many games a team will play, so unlike the official numbers kept by Middlebury athletic director Sean Farrell, a loss will always see a team's QPR drop here. I think that gives a better perspective on where teams stand now.

How do these numbers work? Teams receive 10 points for a win over a D1 opponent, 7 points for a win over a D2 opponent and 5 points for a D3 opponent. Teams also receive 2 points for every game won by the teams they have beaten. QPR is total points divided by games played.
