Week 4 Teams of the Week

Who impressed in Week 4 of Vermont high school football? Here are my thoughts:

Teams of the week
  • Division I: The toughest schedule in the state this fall might belong to Brattleboro, but following Friday night's 51-20 win over South Burlington the Colonels find themselves in the middle of the DI pack at 2-2. That's not bad for a team that's already faced Middlebury and Hartford. Cheick Diakite had another monster game on the ground for a BUHS team that will have a big say in how the playoff picture plays out, starting with next week's homecoming showdown with Colchester.
  • Division II: The schedule makers weren't too kind to Mt. Abraham either, giving the Eagles matchups with Burlington, Bellows Falls and Fair Haven in their first three games after moving up from D3. The results were predictably three big losses. But facing a more favorable matchup against North Country in Week 4, the Eagles shined defensively and turned a pair of first-half touchdowns into a 14-7 win. MAU probably won't be a factor in the playoff race, but with fellow 1-3 Lyndon on the schedule next weekend, that first win could be a start toward a respectable fall.
  • Division III: The sentimental winners of the week have to be the Winooski Spartans. For a program in its final season, just having enough players to get back on the field after a Week 3 forfeit was a triumph. But the Spartans didn't stop there, dominating the second half to score a 46-28 victory over Spaulding. And the success might not end there. With winless MSJ coming to town next week, the Spartans are in position to put themselves into the thick of the playoff race heading into their last two regular-season games -- at Springfield and at home against Fairfax.
Game of the week
  •  Middlebury 18, Colchester 14: The Tigers didn't face much adversity in their back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2013 and 2014. They couldn't have faced much more than they did at Colchester on Friday night, finding themselves down 14-0 in the fourth quarter. Middlebury responded on both sides of the ball, scoring on its last three positions and forcing three quick stops to come from behind. With that obstacle passed and South Burlington, Essex, Rice and CVU left on the schedule, the two-time defending champions have a great chance to take a 30-game winning streak into the playoffs.
